The Newest Work at Home Scam
There is no shortage of work at home scams. It seems there is always a new scam popping up and when you are in the work at home market it is important to you to stay on top of the scams so you do not end up falling for one. The newest scam on the scene today seems like a simple one time job of transferring money. This scam is anything but simple and can get you into some big trouble.
How They Find You
These scam artists find you through your email. They will seek out emails from other scams and start sending you these emails that present you an interesting situation.
Usually the scam takes the form of one of three scenarios. You are told you are a contest winner, the recipient of an inheritance or chosen for a special job. The person sending the email usually represents themselves as someone of high authority or someone who is in a bad situation and needs you help.
They tell you that you can make some easy and quick money. All they need you to do is transfer some money to their bank account. They will send you a money order or check and your deposit it and then make the transfer.
The problem here is two fold. First, they will get access to your banking information once you make that deposit and second, this is an age old scheme called money laundering.
Key Points to Watch For
You want to be sure to delete and report these emails as soon as you get them. Some key things to watch out for include:
- A tone of urgency
- Misuse of titles
- Misspellings
- Emails from other country, especially the UK and Nigeria
- A plea to play on your sympathies
- An outrageous sum of money
- It comes from a free email account, i.e. hotmail or yahoo
You will usually be able to tell these scam emails as soon as you get them. For some reason, they mainly target work at home workers or seekers because they know you are looking for a way to make money.
What Will Happen
You have to be aware that if you do fall for these scams that you are in some trouble. You can be charged with money laundering or other crimes even if you had no idea what you were doing was wrong. Also, and this is usually what happens, you will have your bank account drained. Since they get your banking information the minute you deposit their funds they have immediate access to your account and will take you for everything. Even if you have no money in your account, they will still try to use it and they will take all the money they said they would give you.
This is a very damaging scam. Fortunately it is quite an easy scam to avoid. No matter how much they beg you or how great the story sounds you have to pass because nobody is ever going to offer you an opportunity like this that is legitimate.
