5 Myths About Affiliate Programs

I would like to focus on 5 commonly held myths about affiliate programs that I see afflicting many webmasters that are new to the web, and even some experienced marketers.

Here are the top 5 myths I see many webmasters subscribing to:

1-Highest Commissions are Best

Many webmasters continue to base their decisions on which affiliate programs to join based solely on which programs pay the highest commission rates. Although commission rates are indeed very important, they are only one of the factors that lead to a profitable affiliate program experience.

Even when comparing affiliate programs in the same category highest commissions are not always best. Other important factors to consider are the merchant’s ability to accurately track sales, their criteria on how referral sales are determined, the over-all professionalism of the merchant’s site, and the ease in which customers are able to place their orders.

A good rule of thumb is that when evaluating an affiliate program look at it from the point of view of a customer: Is the site easy to navigate? Does it inspire trust that it is a legitimate and responsible company? Is secure credit card ordering offered? Is it easy to actually complete a purchase? If the answer to any of these is no, it often won’t matter what commission rate they pay, since it will be difficult to convince your visitors to make a purchase.

2-The More the Merrier

Many webmasters new to affiliate programs have the tendency to think that the more programs they join, the better their chances for success will be. The logic behind this is that, like a shopping mall, the more choices you offer, the better your chances are that your visitor will find something that interests them. However, on the Internet, this rarely holds true.

Most Internet users are online with a specific purpose in mind. They are looking for info on a medicine they have been prescribed, reading up on the latest sports news, or they are searching for the best affiliate programs to promote on their site. They are not looking for a shopping mall, but rather a specialty shop.

This is why it is so important to carefully select affiliate programs that fit your visitor’s interests. Promoting too many programs at once can not only make your site slow loading and unprofessional in appearance, but also dilute each program’s chances for success by confusing your visitors with too many choices.

3-Just Add Banners

Banner Ads. They have grown to be almost everywhere. Their effectiveness ranges from outstanding to absolutely abysmal. Unfortunately, for most affiliate programs, banner ads often are closer to the abysmal state. A variety of Internet studies have shown that banner ads are often the worst performers for affiliate program links. Text links with personal testimonials promoting a product or program are still one of the best ways to promote affiliate programs.

Even better, web sites that completely embed affiliate programs into their site often see the greatest success. For example, a dating site that provides valuable content and seamlessly integrates an affiliate program so that their visitors never even realize they are using an affiliate program.

4-Up and Running in Minutes

Many of the affiliate programs today offer instant affiliate approval. Many also claim that you can be earning commissions within minutes. Technically, this is true. But, in the real world, a bit more effort on your part can go a long way towards improving your chances of success with the program.

This point actually leads back to the previous myth about banner ads. If you are adding an affiliate program to your site in a matter of minutes, you are most likely relying on simple banner ads, or perhaps other graphics.

Instead, you may be better off taking a few extra minutes to create an effective strategy for capturing your visitors’ interest. Placement of links for an affiliate program are of utmost importance. Is the link highly visible? Is it in a logical location? Does the link include something that will convince your visitors to take the time to click? Taking the time to anticipate your visitors actions and movement through your site, and how you can relate affiliate program links to them, can pay great dividends in the future.

5-Free Domains are Cost-Free

Many webmasters new to affiliate programs begin their sites using a free domain service such as Tripod or Geocities. For many, myself included when I started this way, the idea is that you can start for free, make some money, and then eventually set up your own web site using the profits. Net cost in this scenario appears to be zero.

However, if you are serious about earning a decent income from the web, using a free web service brings a tremendous invisible cost. Free web sites not only have long, difficult names that are almost impossible to remember or type in, but they also lend a serious sense of amateurism that prevents your visitors from taking your site seriously.

Even if the content you provide is top notch, it will be VERY difficult to raise your site’s traffic to the level at which affiliate programs can become highly profitable. A whole article could be devoted to this topic, but quite simply, free domain names and affiliate programs do not a successful entrepreneur make.

Hopefully dispelling a few of these myths will help in making affiliate programs a more profitable venture. It is possible for you to earn revenues in the hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars per month, but the saying ‘Build it and they will come’ rarely holds true on the Internet. Affiliate programs do, and will take effort if you are planning to earn a substantial income.

Like thousands of others of people I have already worked with, you may be a victim of common misconceptions about teleseminars.

And those misconceptions, indeed myths, are costing you a lot of money because by not doing teleseminars you are putting off your own success. It?s taking you longer to create your own products, it?s harder to know what your customers want, and your list is, well… not growing nearly as quickly as you?d like.

So here are 3 myths I?d like to bust for you right now.

1. I don?t have a product to promote on a teleseminar
2. I don?t have a list to promote my teleseminar to
3. Nobody knows who I am, so why would they listen to me?

Myth #1: I Don?t Have A Product To Promote On A Teleseminar

Too many people believe incorrectly that teleseminars are all about promoting a product.

In fact, a teleseminar is a great way for you to find out what product people want created. Set up a teleseminar that gets your audience to tell you their biggest concerns about a topic you know about, and voila! You have a teleseminar NOT based on promoting a product.

Of course, you can always promote somebody ELSE?s product on a teleseminar.

I bet that if you have ever listened to a teleseminar you can remember that one of the people doing the talking on the call was not the product owner. Instead, he was actually an affiliate interviewing somebody else about her product or services.

And understand this…

After you do your first teleseminar, you WILL have a product to sell on your NEXT teleseminar – the recording and transcripts of the first call!

Truth: Teleseminars don?t have to promote ANYTHING (although they can always promote you), but can result in the creation of a product in about an hour.

Create your next product with the Teleseminar Formula

Myth #2: I Don?t Have A List To Promote My Teleseminar To

Did you ever see that Field of Dreams movie (the one where Kevin Costner tried to show he can actually act?). The phrase “If you build it, they will come” was repeated throughout the film.

The reality is you don?t need your own list at all to do a teleseminar. You can either do a teleseminar with 0 people on the call (I?ve done several of those myself even though I do have a list!), or you can do a teleseminar with someone else who DOES have a list.

The big secret you may have missed out on (until I reveal it to you in the next sentence) is that almost ALL of the big name marketers you know of created their huge lists of subscribers by getting someone else to promote a teleseminar call for them.

Of course, you could always buy a list of attendees through various methods, but I don?t subscribe to that school of thought unless you have a lot more money than connections.

And here?s something else to think about: I bet if you think about it, you know at least 5 other people who would be willing to be your audience for you without feeling like you were trying to “sell them something”. Even if you have no “list”, as in autoresponder database of emails, you do have a circle of impact you can rely on as you learn these skills.

And let?s not forget to mention that the reason you don?t have a list is because you don?t have a reason for somebody to subscribe! Have you heard of the term “list bait”. This term means that in order for someone to become a subscriber of yours (i.e., join your list), you must have an “ethical bribe” to give them.

A live teleseminar or the recorded MP3 is a very valuable gift to give someone in exchange for their name and email.

Truth: Teleseminars are a quick way to borrow a list from the person your interviewing and/or to attract a new list of subscribers by giving away part or all of your teleseminar.

Myth #3: Nobody Knows Who I Am, So Why Would They Listen To Me?

My mentor Paulie Sabol taught me this key fact: nobody will ever think highly of you unless you begin to think better about yourself. This is tough for many people, and was certainly the case for me.

Yet once I understood that my desire to help others was more important than my self-esteem issues, this myth was soon shattered.

The reality is if you will NEVER be “somebody” in your industry until you have a way for people to connect you with your area of expertise. This comes through writing a book (or ebook), creating some software, going on some talkshow, or…

yep, you guessed it – holding teleseminars about what you know.

My first teleseminar was about how to make websites for profit on the internet. Even though I had been doing this for 7 years already, “nobody” knew who I was.

So instead of dwelling on that, I turned the focus on interviewing somebody that people DID already know.

And a short time later, guess what happened…

People did start to know who I was, and my business grew exponentially from there.

The same can happen to you!

Truth: By leveraging the experience and “celebrity” of others in your field, no matter what your topic, you?ll become that somebody people want to listen to and learn from.

Become a known resource to thousands with the Teleseminar Formula

I?m sure that you may have some other misconceptions about teleseminars that are preventing you from using this powerful marketing method. I can think of at least another dozen myself.

But I?d like to hear from you what?s keeping you from using teleseminars to create products, build your list, and become better known for what you know. Post a comment below with your biggest fear, and I?ll do my best to address it in my next post.

Ultimately though, I want you to succeed in business and use teleseminars. This is simply because I know how important they have been to me and so many of the successful business people I know.

Is An Online Business Right For Me?

Many people start an online business full of hope and optimism. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way they lose not only interest, many of them lose money. Not everyone is cut out to have their own business.

Don’t waste your time if you are not a self starter
If you need someone standing over you telling you exactly what to do and when to do it, an online business may not be right for you. Self-starter people will not just sit around thinking about doing something. They decide what they need to do, and simply do it. They understand their strengths and weaknesses and able to accept them. They will find ways to get over obstacles to achieve their goals.

Don’t waste your time if you only like to work 9 to 5
9 to 5The question is: how many hours do you have to work in order for your online business to thrive? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question. Some people find that they can get away working eight hour days, but others have to put in twice as much time in order to be successful. As long as you are willing to work hard for as many hours as it takes, it does not matter what you will be faced with.

If you have fallen for one or more of those get rich quick scams, don’t be ashamed, a lot of us have too. It’s something most people who want to get out of the 9-5 job machine are falling prey to. I have fallen myself as well. Experiences like these, however, helped me never to fall for them again, as well as becoming an expert to warn others.

One of the first clues to look for, to avoid get rich quick scams, are statements like “it will not take much work at all to get to your first $1000 per day, all you need to do is plug in and follow the system”. This is a false statement, or more simply said, a lie. If you are starting in network marketing, or even if you already know what you are doing, it will take you some work to get to this kind of figure. Just think about it for a minute. You are going to plug in to their system, do close to nothing, maybe just a few clicks here and there, and at the end of the day, wow! You’ve just earned $1000! That is when you know that you’ve just found a get rich quick scam.

You will NEVER make money just by plugging into a system. You are going to make money by doing the work of a network marketer. Big difference! That is where those less than honest companies catch their prey, based on the lack of knowledge of the difference between plugging into a system, and actually do the work NEEDED which will bring you success, after you’ve plugged in.

Don’t waste your time if you are looking for a get rich quick scheme
Get rich quick scams are everywhere! You can find them in newspapers, magazines, Television and more, but the place where they have flourished the most is certainly the internet. If you think that there are ways to make money overnight, I have bad news for you; there is simply NOT such thing as get rich overnight.

Getting RichGetting rich overnight! IT is NOT going to happen. When you fall for these types of advertisements, what happens is that you just lose the money you invest in it. The one who is getting rich is the get rich quick scam system you’ve just signed up with.

This being said, there is still hope for an entrepreneur like you, who wants to get free from his 9-5 JOB. There are legitimate resources that can build you a foundation to make money online. They will teach you the best techniques, and practices for earning money online, building the foundation of your business for you.

These programs are of the absolute best quality, and very affordable. If you are truly looking to start a business online, or take your business to the next level, you must investigate them. You will not regret you did, and never fall for a get rich quick scam again.

One thing to remember is that your online business will settle in over time. Even if you are working 15 hours a day for the first few months, this will not last forever. Over time, you will become more comfortable with your business, and this will lead to being able to work fewer hours. How long it takes to be able to cut back your hours depends on how much success you are having.

Don’t waste your time if you are not willing to spend hours doing research and learning new techniques
It seems that the thing most people who are trying to build a online business fail at is the research. They do not realize how important research is to their online success. And I mean a lot of research and proper research.

Things you should research is the type of audience you are trying to target ,specific keywords and that the keywords are highly relevant to market they (you) are trying to promote, the industry (niche/sub niches…) consumer habits, and the competition, age and sex demographics, and even the income ranges.
Here is some advice for picking an affiliate program to market, find something you are interested in and research that product in the niche you have decided on, research all the aspects of that particular niche and once you have decided it can be profitable set up your campaign, then do more research.
Doing ResearchProper research is key to becoming a successful Internet Marketer. I can not stress this enough.Learning how to do proper research on a internet business and online market is the hardest thing to learn about online marketing.Once you master research the rest will surely follow.

To quote Kyle and Carson of Wealthy Affiliate University would say “RESEARCH, MORE RESEARCH AND FREAKIN RESEARCH!”. Proper research is especially important if you plan on becoming a affiliate marketer because if your keywords for your campaign is not highly relevant your chances of success is highly unlikely and your online business will be dead in the water before you even really get started.

Many people are too fixated on the fact that they need all the latest and best keyword and research tools in order to succeed online, the best research tool you have available is your on brain, so use it!

Affiliate marketing is not rocket science, but learning how to do research can be difficult, so you may want to get some one who already knows how to do proper research or join a good membership sites that can give you the guidance, advice and resources that will help you with all your online business success.

Don’t waste your time if you are looking for a business that you can “set it and forget it”
If you have to do a lot of research as stated above, your online business will definitively not be a “set it and forget it” system.

Don’t waste your time if you get bored after doing the same thing 2 or 3 times
You are in for a rude awakening. To be successful, you need to market your business continually. That means every day, not every other month! In developing and promoting an online business, it is also important to have patient and persistence. Just like any other business, it is a learning process and one must continually improve and persist to achieve great success level in developing and promoting the online business. Here, patience and persistence also enable individuals to learn to deal with their emotions well. Developing and promoting a product can be a challenging process. But the ability to handle emotions with great determination and persistence can enable individuals to achieve great level of success in their home business.

Don’t waste your time if you need money RIGHT NOW to pay the mortgage and eat
You should consider another option. Although you can be incredibly successful with your own online business, it takes time to get established before you begin to make money.

Don’t waste your time if you like to socialize and hang out with the herd
Having your own online business means that you will be spending many solitary hours alone in the office with only your computer for companionship.

Having your own online business can be incredibly fun, exciting, and rewarding. But it is not for everyone. Some people are better off keeping the day job and just dreaming about what it would be like to have their own online business.
